Position Summary

The Department of Entomology at the University of Arizona is seeking candidates for a full-time postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Xianchun Li. The successful candidate would be part of a collaborative project between Dr. Michael Riehle and Dr. Li at the University of Arizona evaluating use of a transposable element from the bollworm (Helicoverpa zea) as a genetic drive mechanism for spreading anti-malaria transgenes in populations of a mosquito that transmits malaria.  Studies will include generating donor and helper constructs, transfecting mosquito cells, determining frequencies of post-integration excision, duplication, and remobilization, and analyzing excision, duplication, and remobilization events with various molecular methods.  The successful candidate would also participate in other research projects in the lab such as RNAi and P450 regulation to gain more research experience. 

The successful candidate should have a PhD in molecular biology, entomology or a related field and have a competitive publication record. Previous experience working with cell culture, transposable elements, RNA polyadenylation, or mosquitoes is a plus. The candidate will be expected to participate in professional meetings and assist with manuscript and research proposal preparation.

Duties and Responsibilities

·　　　　 　　 Independently design, perform and interpret the results of experiments.

·　　　　 　　 Prepare the research results for publication in peer reviewed journals and presentation at scientific meetings.

·　　　　 　　 Supervise graduate and undergraduate students working on the project.

·　　　　 　　 Perform administrative and maintenance duties involved in general laboratory management. 

Minimum qualifications

·　　　　 　　  PhD in molecular biology, entomology or a related field. 

Preferred qualification

·　　　　 　　 Previous experience with cell culture, RNA polyadenylation, and transposable elements a major plus.

·　　　　 　　 Previous experience working with mosquitoes.

·　　　　 　　 Experience with basic molecular biology protocols such as cloning, genome walking, PCR, qRT-PCR, mutagenesis, western blotting, immunocytochemistry.
